City captain Lebogang Manyama broke the deadlock in the 67th minute at Makhulong Stadium after teammates Thato Mokeke and Lehlohonolo Majoro fired wide of the mark in the first half.
The lead, however, was short-lived as Zambian hitman Mbesuma equalised three minutes later with his third goal of the season and 100th in all PSL competitions.
Mbesuma became only the fifth PSL era player to score 100 PSL goals, adding his name to a very exclusive list of players to do so.
Mbesuma – who scored a record 25 league goals in the 2004/05 season with Kaizer Chiefs – managed to rekindle some of his old form last year, bagging 14 goals as he went on to claim the 2015/16 Absa Premiership Golden Boot while playing for Mpumalanga Black Aces.
The other stars to have made their way past the 100 goal mark in PSL football – both league and cup – are Siyabonga Nomvethe, Mabhuti Khenyeza, Daniel Mudau and Manuel Bucuane.
However, with plenty of games still left to play this season and no plans to retire just yet, Mbesuma could become the highest goalscorer in PSL history with another 20 goals.
